Dr. Kimberly R. Mayes, LCSW is the Founder & Clinical Director at Essence Therapy & Wellness Center, where the mission is to, “Recreate the definition of therapy & self-care for the BIPOC community through effective, relatable therapeutic services”. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of Florida & her Master of Social Work from Clark Atlanta University. Dr. Mayes graduated with a Doctor of Social Work from Simmons University, where her research centered on implementing culturally responsive interventions into psychotherapy sessions for BIPOC women.

With over 20 years of professional experience, Dr. Mayes has held leadership roles in hospital, educational, & non-profit settings. She holds clinical licenses in Texas, Georgia, & Florida.

Dr. Mayes is Assistant Professor of Social Work at Florida Gulf Coast University, where she engages students in various courses such as Social Work Practice, Seminar, Field Education, Medical Social Work & other generalist & clinical courses. Dr. Mayes desires to impart skills in all of her students that allows them to be confident & competent social workers post graduation. With this as her goal, she creatively integrates practical & innovative activities in to her coursework.

When Dr. Mayes is not supporting clients or students, she is laughing with family & friends, cooking a delicious meal, or traveling the friendly skies.
